British Mountain Bike Series Round 1 – Sherwood Pines

After my 2 blog entries from early season road races I feel I owe the blog community an entry from my first mountain bike race of the season. Sherwood Pines was the venue which offers flat, fast and singletrack terrain, some tight and twisty, some open and smooth. Arriving at 9am I set out on a practice lap and was surprised at how much tight and twisty singletrack there was, I guessed this was to stop big groups forming and becoming like a road race. My race started at 12.30 so I hung around watching the other races and chatting to a few people. Soon enough 12.15 arrived and I was in the holding pen waiting to be gridded in glorious sunshine. The start, as usual, was manic and fast, everyone fighting for position, banging elbows, riding off the track to get round people whilst breating from the pit of your lungs, awesome fun. I was sitting in about 15th position going into the first bit of singletrack and settled into my race rhythm. The first lap was quite un-eventful with the field sorting itself out and small groups forming. The course had been designed to loop back through the arena for spectator value and on a short descent there was a log to ride over or bunny hop. A guy in front of me tried the bunny hop, clipped his back wheel and went flying over the bars…………great for the spectators. After lap 1 my back started to tire and a few guys came past me, half way round lap 2 and I was in some quite substantial pain. This has happened before and when it does I loose the ability to apply force to the pedals meaning I go back through the pack………quickly! With such a flat course there is nowhere to recover so I soldiered on for 3 laps before pulling out, deciding that it wasn’t doing me any good. Im not going to make any excuses, I clearly have some work to do in terms of mountain bike pedalling efficiency, lower back strength/fitness. It felt good to be racing the mountain bike again.

All you have to do is ride flat out until you feel sick, then keep it there for about 1hr 30ish, then sprint…!!! Well done anyway, better luck next time…

I know what I needed to do and it was working for a lap before my back seriously gave up 🙁
