First MTB race win for me & Velo29

After a full weeks recovery from the crazy team antics on Bute I was ready for my next MTB race, which was round 2 of the Brownbacks race series at Lee Quarry near Rochdale. Having finished 2nd in round one I was looking to go one better this time out. Setting out very early in glorious sunshine was never destined to last as I was slowed to 40mph in super thick fog on the high point of the M62, well, I was heading towards Manchester! A new course had been promised from the organisers and my practice lap revealed a shortened version, which would have made a 5 minute lap! On the start line the organiser announced a slight mis-hap with course marking saying ‘you may not have had chance to ride the full course’, that’s ok, I can ride a course blind……..I think! The winner from the last round, Tom Bell, shot up the first climb while I tried in vain to get on his wheel. In my defence I would like to point out that he weighs 20kgs less than me and as any cyclist knows, weight is an issue, especially uphill! Another rider (Gareth) and myself managed to get on his wheel and follow for the first lap, we then proceeded to drop Tom going up the climb to start lap 2. I followed Gareth for a lap then decided to hit the front and set the pace. I opened a gap of about 10 seconds and maintained that for a few laps and then managed to open it again to about 20 seconds. At this point I knew I had cracked my opponent. Apart from a very scary moment when I nearly went off a cliff side and getting slightly disorientated with course marking it was pushing very hard until the finish to claim my first mountain bike race win, awesome! Another handful of bikeshop vouchers and a pretty cool trophy that looks like a disc brake……..schaweeeeet! The final round is on the 18th October and after that I will be taking some deserved R&R from 2 months of intense racing.
